Overview
UGREEN 25051 USB 3.0 to 2.5GbE Ethernet Adapter (CM648) is a CM648 multi-gigabit network adapter with the documented RTL8156BG controller, short integrated lead and explicit driver/path requirements.

What it does well.

Key features
02 · At a glance
Up to 2.5Gbps link. The RJ45 link ceiling is 2.5Gbps. Real application throughput is lower because of Ethernet/IP overhead, storage, CPU and endpoint limits.
USB-A 3.0 host. Use a USB-A 3.0 host port rather than USB 2.0 when aiming above Gigabit.
RTL8156BG. RJ45 link modes: 10Mbps, 100Mbps, 1Gbps and 2.5Gbps automatic negotiation.
15cm lead. Official driver availability covers Windows, macOS and Linux families.
Every interface and indicator explained
03 · Connector clarity
USB-A 3.0 host plug. Provides upstream data and adapter power. USB 2.0 backward operation can constrain performance below the multi-gigabit target.
RJ45 multi-gigabit socket. Auto-negotiates 10/100/1000/2500Mbps with compatible network equipment.
Network status indicators. Report link/activity. Read the negotiated speed in the host or switch because indicators are not an application-throughput meter.
Approximately 15cm integrated TPE lead. Keeps the adapter portable while reducing strain; avoid sharp folds and pulling.
Aluminium enclosure. Helps dissipate controller heat and should remain exposed to air.

Link-rate ceilings and real throughput
04 · Performance planning
The RJ45 link ceiling is 2.5Gbps. Real application throughput is lower because of Ethernet/IP overhead, storage, CPU and endpoint limits.
The adapter falls back to 1Gbps, 100Mbps or 10Mbps when any active network component cannot negotiate 2.5GbE.
USB-A 3.0 provides host-link headroom; plugging into USB 2.0 can become the dominant bottleneck.
A complete 2.5GbE route needs a compatible driver, USB 3 host controller, 2.5GbE router/switch/NAS port and qualified four-pair cabling.
Multi-gigabit local transfers can be faster than broadband. An internet test cannot isolate the adapter unless the service and every WAN/LAN port are also faster than 1Gbps.
What the host, cable or radio route must support
05 · Complete path
Use a USB-A 3.0 host port rather than USB 2.0 when aiming above Gigabit.
Use a 2.5GbE-capable router, switch, modem or NAS port.
A qualified Cat5e path can support 2.5GBASE-T; Cat6 is the practical recommendation for a new or uncertain installation.
Install the CM648/RTL8156 driver when the operating system requires it.
Verify the negotiated link at the host and network equipment, then test between capable local endpoints.

Standards, negotiation and operating roles
06 · Network behaviour
RJ45 link modes: 10Mbps, 100Mbps, 1Gbps and 2.5Gbps automatic negotiation.
Controller: Realtek RTL8156BG.
The adapter creates one Ethernet interface; router/DHCP equipment normally provides IP, gateway and DNS settings.
The USB-A connection supplies adapter bus power and data only; it is not a charging output or USB pass-through hub.
The RJ45 socket supplies no IEEE PoE or passive power, and no VLAN/PXE/jumbo/Wake-on-LAN promise is made.
Ceiling, not a promise
A port, radio or USB label is a signalling ceiling. Real performance depends on the complete path, protocol overhead, local conditions and the devices at both ends.

Compatible devices and systems
07 · Device fit
Windows 11. Regional guidance lists native operation; managed or unusual builds can still require updates.
Other supported Windows releases. Use the CM648/RTL8156 driver according to the official package and system architecture.
macOS. Regional guidance lists native operation, subject to current OS release and security policy.
Linux. UGREEN provides a driver package, but kernel, distribution, CPU architecture and Secure Boot determine installation.
Selected Android OTG devices. India material mentions Android use, but the phone/tablet must support USB host Ethernet and may need an adapter for the USB-A plug.
USB-A desktops and laptops. Require a USB 3 host controller for the intended multi-gigabit performance.
Use scenarios
08 · Practical value
2.5GbE desktop or laptop upgrade. Add multi-gigabit wired networking without replacing the internal network card.
Fast NAS transfer. Connect to a 2.5GbE switch/NAS path for local backup and media workflows.
Multi-gig broadband client. Use when the service, router LAN port and host path all exceed Gigabit.
Wired diagnostics. Compare the direct Ethernet path with Wi-Fi while clearly accounting for the network's negotiated rate.
Setup and usability guidance
09 · Usability
- Confirm CM648 / SKU 25051 and obtain the current driver before removing an existing network connection if needed.
- Connect the USB-A plug directly to a USB 3.0 host port.
- Connect a known-good four-pair Ethernet cable to a 2.5GbE-capable network port.
- Wait for the interface to appear and install the official driver when the OS requires it.
- Confirm IP address, gateway and negotiated Ethernet rate.
- Use a fast local 2.5GbE endpoint to test the adapter before relying on an internet-speed result.

Driver and operating-system guidance
10 · Software
Official driver availability covers Windows, macOS and Linux families.
Regional guidance identifies Windows 11 and macOS as native-operation cases while other Windows releases may need the driver.
Linux support depends on kernel, distribution, CPU architecture, build tools and Secure Boot/module-signing policy.
Android OTG compatibility is conditional on the mobile device, OS and physical host adapter arrangement.
Do not market the product as universally driver-free merely because it works natively on one tested OS.
Business-managed systems may block external network interfaces or third-party driver installation.
Driver discipline
Match this SKU, chipset, operating-system version and CPU architecture. A driver for a similar enclosure can be incompatible with the hardware inside.
What this product does
11 · scope
- Adds an auto-negotiating 2.5GbE-capable RJ45 interface to a supported USB-A 3.0 host.
- Falls back to 1Gbps, 100Mbps or 10Mbps to match the connected network path.
- Uses the documented RTL8156BG controller, 15cm lead and aluminium enclosure.

What this product does not do
12 · Clear boundaries
- It does not make a Gigabit-only switch, router, NAS or USB 2.0 host operate at 2.5Gbps.
- It does not provide charging, USB pass-through, video or a USB-C connector.
- It does not supply or receive PoE through RJ45.
- It is not a modem, router, Wi-Fi adapter or network switch.
- It does not guarantee 2.5Gbps application throughput merely from a 2.5Gbps negotiated link.

What to do
13 · Best practice
Recommended. Use USB 3.0 and verify every network component supports 2.5GbE.
Recommended. Use qualified four-pair cabling; prefer Cat6 for a new installation.
Recommended. Install the current CM648/RTL8156 driver when needed.
Recommended. Check negotiated link separately from application speed.
Recommended. Keep the aluminium enclosure ventilated.
What not to do
14 · Common mistakes
Avoid. Do not connect through USB 2.0 and expect multi-gigabit performance.
Avoid. Do not claim universal plug-and-play or Android support.
Avoid. Do not connect a PoE load expecting the adapter to power it.
Avoid. Do not force or sharply fold the 15cm lead.
Avoid. Do not treat a 2.5Gbps PHY link as a guaranteed 2.5Gbps download.

Warnings and limitations
15 · Read before use
Warning / limitation 1. A wired connection exposes the host to the connected network; use trusted infrastructure and host security controls.
Warning / limitation 2. Mild warmth is possible under sustained 2.5GbE traffic. Disconnect if heat, smell or resets become abnormal.
Warning / limitation 3. Use undamaged USB and RJ45 contacts and disconnect during electrical storms or cable servicing.
Warning / limitation 4. Driver installation may require administrator access and kernel/system changes; follow organisational policy.
Warning / limitation 5. Mobile Android compatibility is device-specific and can require a separate OTG connector arrangement.
Troubleshooting by symptom
16 · Diagnostics
No Ethernet interface appears. Try a direct USB 3.0 port and install the CM648/RTL8156 driver for the OS.
Link negotiates at 1Gbps. Verify both endpoints and every intermediate device support 2.5GbE, then replace the cable with a known-good Cat6 lead.
Link drops to 100Mbps. Inspect or replace the cable and wall terminations; damaged or missing pairs commonly cause this mode.
Internet result is below 2.5Gbps. Check service and router WAN/LAN limits, then use a capable local endpoint to isolate the adapter.
Connection resets under load. Update the driver, test another direct USB 3.0 port, shorten the Ethernet route and improve airflow.
