Product overview

Overview

UGREEN 10789 separates the listening and microphone contacts of a compatible 3.5mm combo jack. The male TRRS plug goes into the phone, tablet, laptop or controller; the headphone female socket receives the listening plug, and the microphone female socket receives the microphone plug.

Features

What it does well.

UGREEN 10789 white TRRS headset plug with headphone and microphone sockets

Key features

Highlights

  • Host connector: one 3.5mm four-pole TRRS male plug for a compatible combined headset jack.
  • Accessory sockets: separate labelled 3.5mm headphone output and microphone input.
  • Length: approximately 20cm branch cable, as identified by this SKU title.
  • Passive: no driver, power supply, controls, sound card or digital converter.
  • Construction: gold-plated connector surfaces, TPE jacket and compact moulded housings shown by this product media.

Connector map and signal direction

Know every end

The three ends have different roles. Follow the headphone and microphone icons; swapping the accessory plugs will not produce a valid circuit.

  • TRRS male: inserts into a host combo jack that supports stereo headphone output and microphone input on one four-pole socket.
  • Headphone female socket: accepts the listening plug from separate stereo headphones or the headphone plug of a dual-plug headset.
  • Direction: the host combo jack is the central endpoint; audio leaves it through the headphone branch and microphone audio returns through the microphone branch.
  • Pinout: the host and accessories must use compatible headset wiring. A CTIA/OMTP mismatch can cause absent or incorrect microphone operation.

Use scenarios

Where it makes sense

This splitter is useful when a combo-jack host needs separate listening and recording accessories. It does not serve devices that already expose two host jacks.

  • Laptop with one compatible headset combo jack used with separate desktop headphones and a separate 3.5mm microphone.
  • Phone or tablet with a native compatible 3.5mm combo jack used for calls, lessons or mobile recording with separate accessories.
  • Supported game-controller combo jack used with a dual-plug gaming headset, after checking the controller generation and headset wiring.
  • Compact voice-chat or karaoke setup where the host supports analogue headset input and output through the same socket.
  • A jack-less phone requires a separate USB-C or Lightning audio adapter that specifically supports headset microphone input, not just playback.

Setup and usability guidance

Connect with confidence

Connect with software muted and confirm each icon before raising volume or enabling microphone monitoring.

  1. Check that the host port is labelled for a headset or shows a combined headphone-and-microphone icon. A headphone-only output cannot accept microphone audio.
  2. Insert the splitter TRRS male plug fully into the host. Remove a restrictive case if it prevents complete seating.
  3. Connect the headphone plug to the socket with the headphone icon and the microphone plug to the socket with the microphone icon.
  4. In the operating system or app, choose the wired headset/headphones for output and the external/headset microphone for input.
  5. Run a low-volume playback and microphone test. If the mic is absent, verify TRRS pinout, plug style and host support before changing software.

Compatible devices and systems

Match the physical and electrical interface

Compatibility depends on host jack function and pin assignment, not merely on the presence of a 3.5mm hole.

  • Phones, tablets and laptops with a combined analogue 3.5mm headset jack that carries both stereo output and microphone input.
  • Compatible PS4-style and Xbox controller generations that provide the supported four-pole headset jack; older controllers or adapters can differ.
  • Separate stereo headphones plus a compatible standalone 3.5mm microphone, or a dual-plug PC headset with distinct headphone and microphone plugs.
  • Some USB-C or Lightning audio dongles when they explicitly support microphone input and the same headset pinout.
  • Not suitable for optical, USB, balanced pro-audio, XLR microphones or hosts that have only a stereo headphone output.

What this product does

Capabilities

  • Breaks one compatible combined TRRS host jack into distinct listening and microphone branches.
  • Carries stereo playback to the headphone socket while routing a compatible microphone signal back to the host.
  • Lets a dual-plug PC headset work with a supported single combo-jack device.
  • Provides icon-marked sockets so the two accessory functions can be identified at a glance.
  • Operates without drivers because all active audio processing remains in the host device.

What this product does not do

Clear boundaries

  • It does not split one stereo output between two pairs of headphones.
  • It does not create microphone support on a headphone-only jack or repair a disabled/unsupported host input.
  • It does not act as a USB sound card, amplifier, mixer, recorder or digital-to-analogue converter.
  • It does not guarantee compatibility between different TRRS standards such as CTIA and OMTP.
  • It does not provide phantom power for XLR or professional condenser microphones.

What to do

Good practice

  • Turn the source volume down, mute the channel or power equipment off before inserting or removing plugs; this reduces loud pops and protects connected speakers and hearing.
  • Push each connector fully home without twisting the cable as a lever. A partly seated plug can lose a channel, hum, crackle or make intermittent contact.
  • Route the cable away from mains adapters, motorised equipment and sharp metal edges where practical, then provide enough slack that the connector is not carrying the cable weight.
  • Coil the cable in broad, relaxed loops for storage. Inspect the plugs, strain reliefs and jacket before a recording, performance or long unattended session.
  • Confirm the source output type, destination input type and expected signal level in both device manuals; matching connector diameter alone is not enough.

What not to do

Avoid these mistakes

  • Do not connect two headphones expecting both to play; the second socket is for a microphone, not a second listener.
  • Do not force a TS microphone plug when the compatibility graphic marks that pattern unsupported.
  • Do not plug the TRRS male end into a headphone-only output and expect microphone recording.
  • Do not assume every game controller, USB-C dongle or phone case provides the same analogue headset wiring and clearance.
  • Do not pull the two branches apart, bend them tightly at the Y junction or use the cable to support the weight of attached accessories.

Warnings and limitations

Important safety and performance notes

A microphone path may fail silently when the host, adapter or accessory uses a different pinout. Test the full chain before a call, class, stream or recording.

  • Start at low headphone volume, especially when microphone monitoring is enabled; feedback can occur if a live microphone is close to speakers.
  • CTIA and OMTP four-pole layouts are not interchangeable without a suitable adapter. The product does not electronically detect or rearrange contacts.
  • A playback-only USB-C or Lightning dongle will not pass microphone input even if its 3.5mm socket accepts the plug physically.
  • Operating-system privacy permissions and app input selection can block the microphone even when the cable is wired correctly.
  • Stop using the splitter if a plug, socket or branch is cracked, loose or exposes internal conductors.

Troubleshooting and buying checklist

Solve common connection problems

Separate physical, pinout and software checks. Changing several settings at once makes the cause harder to identify.

  • Headphones work but microphone does not: confirm the host jack includes mic input, the mic is in the labelled socket, the app has permission and the pinout is compatible.
  • Microphone works but playback is absent: reseat the host and headphone plugs, select the wired output and test the headphones directly in a known-good jack.
  • Sound is distorted or channels are missing: remove an obstructing case and push the four-pole host plug fully home.
  • Controller does not detect the headset: confirm the controller model/revision, firmware and analogue headset support; some older controllers require their own adapter.
  • Before buying: verify one combo host jack, compatible four-pole wiring, separate accessory plugs and a short 20cm breakout route.
