What it does well.

UGREEN 70446 USB-C to 2.5GbE Ethernet Adapter

Key features

02 · At a glance

Up to 2.5Gbps link. 2.5Gbps is the Ethernet link-rate ceiling, not guaranteed file-copy or internet throughput. Protocol overhead, storage speed, CPU load and the remote endpoint reduce results.

RTL8156. The USB-C host port must expose USB data at sufficient speed; a charge-only USB-C port cannot operate the adapter.

USB-C host. RJ45 negotiation supports 10Mbps, 100Mbps, 1Gbps and 2.5Gbps Ethernet link modes.

No PoE or PD. Official compatibility lists Windows, macOS and iOS.

Every interface and indicator explained

03 · Connector clarity

USB-C host plug. Connects to a host USB data port. The connector shape does not mean the adapter accepts charging or carries display video.

RJ45 Ethernet socket. Auto-negotiates 10/100/1000/2500Mbps with the connected router, switch or wall link.

Integrated approximately 15cm lead. Provides short strain relief for portable use; avoid pulling the adapter by the cable.

Link/activity indication.

Aluminium enclosure. Helps spread controller heat. Mild warmth under sustained 2.5GbE traffic can be normal when ventilated.

Link-rate ceilings and real throughput

04 · Performance planning

2.5Gbps is the Ethernet link-rate ceiling, not guaranteed file-copy or internet throughput. Protocol overhead, storage speed, CPU load and the remote endpoint reduce results.

The adapter negotiates down to 1Gbps, 100Mbps or 10Mbps when any active part of the path cannot establish 2.5GbE.

A complete 2.5GbE path needs a 2.5GbE host-side USB link, compatible driver, 2.5GbE router/switch/NAS port and suitable cable.

The source recommends Cat6 or better for 2.5GbE. A cable marked for higher category still needs intact pairs and correct terminations.

A multi-gigabit local network can accelerate transfers to a capable NAS even when the broadband plan is slower than 2.5Gbps.

What the host, cable or radio route must support

05 · Complete path

The USB-C host port must expose USB data at sufficient speed; a charge-only USB-C port cannot operate the adapter.

The connected switch, router, modem or NAS port must explicitly support 2.5GbE to negotiate 2.5Gbps.

Use the supported operating system and its current network driver.

Use a short, intact Cat6-or-better cable for the clearest 2.5GbE recommendation and verify any wall jacks or couplers in the route.

Check the negotiated link in the operating system or network equipment rather than inferring it from the internet speed test.

Standards, negotiation and operating roles

06 · Network behaviour

RJ45 negotiation supports 10Mbps, 100Mbps, 1Gbps and 2.5Gbps Ethernet link modes.

The adapter is a USB network interface; IP addressing normally comes from a router/DHCP server.

This model does not inject IEEE PoE or passive power and should not be used as a power source for cameras, access points or phones.

No VLAN, PXE, jumbo-frame or Wake-on-LAN promise is included in this customer copy.

Ceiling, not a promise

A port, radio or USB label is a signalling ceiling. Real performance depends on the complete path, protocol overhead, local conditions and the devices at both ends.

Compatible devices and systems

07 · Device fit

Windows USB-C computers. Use a host USB-C data port and the compatible current driver exposed by the operating system or official package.

Mac computers with USB-C. Official material lists macOS; functionality remains subject to the macOS release and USB port.

Compatible iPad / iOS devices. Official material lists iOS. The device must expose USB networking and may show Ethernet settings only after connection.

Linux / ChromeOS. Explicitly not supported by the official source; do not infer support from the RTL8156 chipset alone.

Android. Explicitly not supported by the official source for SKU 70446.

Use scenarios

08 · Practical value

2.5GbE NAS transfer. Connect a compatible laptop to a 2.5GbE switch or NAS for faster local file movement than Gigabit can provide.

Stable wired office network. Replace variable Wi-Fi with an auto-negotiated wired link on a supported USB-C host.

Multi-gig broadband endpoint. Use only when the modem/router LAN port and service can exceed 1Gbps.

Tablet Ethernet access. Connect a supported iPad/iOS device to a wired network when the OS exposes compatible USB networking.

Setup and usability guidance

09 · Usability

  1. Confirm SKU 70446 and check that the host operating system is in the supported list.
  2. Connect the USB-C plug directly to a host USB data port, not a charge-only socket.
  3. Connect a known-good Cat6-or-better cable between the adapter and the router, switch, modem or NAS.
  4. Wait for the OS to create the Ethernet interface and install an compatible driver if required.
  5. Confirm an IP address, gateway and negotiated link rate in network settings.
  6. For a 2.5GbE test, copy between fast local endpoints before using an internet speed test.

Driver and operating-system guidance

10 · Software

Official compatibility lists Windows, macOS and iOS.

Driver needs vary by OS release; use the operating system's current native or official RTL8156-compatible package rather than claiming universal driver-free operation.

Linux is explicitly excluded by the source despite the chipset family having broader third-party support elsewhere.

ChromeOS and Android are explicitly excluded for this SKU.

A future OS update can change USB-network driver behaviour; verify the current release when the adapter is intended for a locked-down or business-managed device.

No management software is required for ordinary Ethernet settings beyond the host network driver.

Driver discipline

Match this SKU, chipset, operating-system version and CPU architecture. A driver for a similar enclosure can be incompatible with the hardware inside.

What this product does not do

12 · Clear boundaries

  • It does not add 2.5GbE capability to a Gigabit-only switch, router, NAS or cable path.
  • It does not charge the host, accept USB-C PD, output video or provide USB pass-through.
  • It does not provide PoE or passive power through RJ45.
  • It does not act as a router, modem, Wi-Fi adapter or network switch.
  • It does not have exact-source support for Linux, ChromeOS or Android.

What to do

13 · Best practice

Recommended. Verify every device in the path supports 2.5GbE.

Recommended. Use a Cat6-or-better cable as recommended by the source.

Recommended. Connect to a genuine USB data port and check the negotiated rate in the OS.

Recommended. Keep the network driver and operating system current.

Recommended. Eject or stop large network transfers before disconnecting.

What not to do

14 · Common mistakes

Avoid. Do not connect a charger to the RJ45 socket or expect the USB-C plug to charge the computer.

Avoid. Do not promise Linux, ChromeOS or Android compatibility.

Avoid. Do not call a 2.5Gbps link a guaranteed 2.5Gbps application result.

Avoid. Do not force the short cable at a sharp angle or lift the laptop by the adapter.

Avoid. Do not expect the adapter to supply PoE equipment.

Warnings and limitations

15 · Read before use

Warning / limitation 1. Use only undamaged Ethernet and USB connectors; bent contacts can cause intermittent links or port damage.

Warning / limitation 2. Mild warmth is normal during sustained conversion; keep the metal housing uncovered and disconnect it if heat or odour becomes abnormal.

Warning / limitation 3. Disconnect the adapter during electrical storms or when servicing the network cabling.

Warning / limitation 4. A wired connection joins the host to the connected network; use trusted networks and the host firewall.

Warning / limitation 5. The support exclusions matter: a matching USB-C connector is not proof of Linux, ChromeOS or Android operation.

Troubleshooting by symptom

16 · Diagnostics

No Ethernet interface appears. Confirm the USB-C port carries data, reconnect directly and check the OS/driver support.

Link negotiates at 1Gbps. Verify both network endpoints support 2.5GbE and replace the cable with a short known-good Cat6-or-better lead.

Link is only 100Mbps. Check all four cable pairs, wall terminations and intermediate couplers; a two-pair path cannot provide Gigabit or 2.5GbE.

Local network works but internet does not. Check DHCP, gateway, router WAN and ISP status; the adapter does not provide internet service.

Connection drops under load. Test another supported host port, update the driver, shorten the Ethernet path and keep the housing ventilated.
