UGREEN 50340 AC1300 Dual-Band USB 3.0 Wi-Fi Adapter (CM492)

Key features

02 · At a glance

Wi-Fi 5 / 802.11ac. The advertised AC1300 class combines separate theoretical link-rate ceilings: up to 867Mbps on 5GHz and up to 400Mbps on 2.4GHz. A client uses one band at a time; the figures are not added for one transfer.

867 + 400Mbps class. Use a dual-band 802.11ac or compatible router/access point to access the 5GHz Wi-Fi 5 feature set.

USB 3.0. Wireless class: IEEE 802.11ac with backward-compatible 802.11a/b/g/n operation as documented for this model.

RTL8812AU. Official sources list Windows 11/10 plug-and-play for supported builds; do not extend that statement to every Windows edition or installation state.

Every interface and indicator explained

03 · Connector clarity

USB-A 3.0 plug. Connect directly to a compatible computer. A USB 2.0 socket can physically accept it but constrains the available USB link and may reduce real wireless throughput.

Internal dual-band antenna system. The specified antenna gain is 3dBi. Orientation and the computer chassis affect reception; this is not a detachable high-gain antenna.

Status indicator. Reports adapter activity according to the installed driver; it does not measure signal strength or internet speed.

No Ethernet socket. This adapter adds Wi-Fi, not wired RJ45 networking.

No USB pass-through. The computer's USB port is occupied while the adapter is connected.

Link-rate ceilings and real throughput

04 · Performance planning

The advertised AC1300 class combines separate theoretical link-rate ceilings: up to 867Mbps on 5GHz and up to 400Mbps on 2.4GHz. A client uses one band at a time; the figures are not added for one transfer.

5GHz normally offers more channel capacity and less congestion at short-to-medium range, while 2.4GHz generally travels farther and passes obstacles better.

Real file-copy and internet results are lower than the negotiated Wi-Fi rate because of protocol overhead, channel width, interference, router capability, distance and the remote server.

USB 3.0 gives the adapter enough host-link headroom for its Wi-Fi 5 class. A USB 2.0 host path can become a bottleneck.

The adapter cannot upgrade a Wi-Fi 4/5 router into Wi-Fi 6, nor can it exceed the router, ISP or remote-service ceiling.

What the host, cable or radio route must support

05 · Complete path

Use a dual-band 802.11ac or compatible router/access point to access the 5GHz Wi-Fi 5 feature set.

Install the CM492/RTL8812AU driver when the operating system does not provide a suitable one before expecting the wireless interface to appear.

For best reception, avoid placing the adapter directly behind a metal desktop tower, under a desk full of cabling or beside a strong USB 3.0 noise source.

Choose the router's 5GHz SSID for higher potential throughput and the 2.4GHz SSID when range or wall penetration is more important.

Standards, negotiation and operating roles

06 · Network behaviour

Wireless class: IEEE 802.11ac with backward-compatible 802.11a/b/g/n operation as documented for this model.

Radio bands: 2.4GHz and 5GHz; there is no 6GHz Wi-Fi 6E radio.

Station mode connects the computer to an existing wireless network.

Official material also lists Soft AP/Wi-Fi sharing, but availability depends on the operating system, driver and local network-sharing policy.

Ceiling, not a promise

A port, radio or USB label is a signalling ceiling. Real performance depends on the complete path, protocol overhead, local conditions and the devices at both ends.

UGREEN 50340 AC1300 Dual-Band USB 3.0 Wi-Fi Adapter (CM492)

Compatible devices and systems

07 · Device fit

Windows 11 and Windows 10. Official material lists plug-and-play behaviour on supported builds, but Windows Update or the current official driver may still be needed after a clean install.

Windows 8.1 / 8 / 7. Use the matching official CM492/RTL8812AU driver and follow the installer requirements for the system architecture.

Intel-based Macs. Official Intel-Mac material covers macOS 10.11 and later versions within the released driver range; verify the current driver before purchase.

Apple-silicon Macs. Not promised. An Intel-era macOS driver is not evidence of native Apple-silicon support.

Linux and other systems. UGREEN publishes a broader driver bundle, but kernel, architecture and secure-boot compatibility are version-dependent; treat support as conditional rather than universal.

Use scenarios

08 · Practical value

Desktop without built-in Wi-Fi. Add access to a home or office dual-band wireless network through an available USB-A port.

Replace a weak or older client radio. Use an external Wi-Fi 5 adapter when the computer's supported internal adapter is slower or unreliable.

Temporary network recovery. Restore wireless access while diagnosing a failed internal adapter, after installing the correct driver.

Software access point. Share a compatible wired connection only when the installed OS and driver expose Soft AP functionality.

Setup and usability guidance

09 · Usability

  1. Before disconnecting an existing network, download the CM492/RTL8812AU driver for the target operating system when required.
  2. Install the driver first if the official instructions for that OS require it, then restart if prompted.
  3. Insert the adapter into a USB 3.0 port with reasonable clearance and away from large metal obstructions.
  4. Open the operating system's Wi-Fi control, select the intended 5GHz or 2.4GHz network and enter its credentials.
  5. Confirm the network is using a mutually supported security mode and obtain an IP address from the router.
  6. Test close to the router first, then move the computer to its normal location and compare signal and stability.

Driver and operating-system guidance

10 · Software

Official sources list Windows 11/10 plug-and-play for supported builds; do not extend that statement to every Windows edition or installation state.

Older Windows releases require the matching driver. Use the official UGREEN CM492/RTL8812AU package, not a driver for a visually similar adapter.

UGREEN provides Intel-Mac driver material beginning at macOS 10.11, but later macOS releases can change kernel-extension and security requirements.

Linux support is conditional on distribution, kernel, architecture and driver build. Secure Boot may also prevent an unsigned module from loading.

The included optical disc is useful only on computers with a compatible drive; the current official download is the more practical installation source.

Driver discipline

Match this SKU, chipset, operating-system version and CPU architecture. A driver for a similar enclosure can be incompatible with the hardware inside.

What to do

13 · Best practice

Recommended. Obtain the official driver before removing a working network connection.

Recommended. Prefer a USB 3.0 port and position the adapter away from metal shielding.

Recommended. Use 5GHz near the router for throughput and 2.4GHz when coverage matters more.

Recommended. Keep the router firmware, operating system and adapter driver current.

Recommended. Use a security mode supported by both the access point and the driver.

What not to do

14 · Common mistakes

Avoid. Do not install a driver for a different chipset merely because the adapter looks similar.

Avoid. Do not promise WPA3, Wi-Fi 6 or Apple-silicon Mac support from unrelated listings.

Avoid. Do not add 867 and 400Mbps as one simultaneous client transfer.

Avoid. Do not force the adapter where adjacent USB plugs leave no clearance.

Avoid. Do not remove it while its driver installer or network-sharing service is being configured.

Warnings and limitations

15 · Read before use

Warning / limitation 1. Wireless performance varies with local radio conditions and cannot be guaranteed from the link-rate label.

Warning / limitation 2. Use only legally permitted channels and transmit settings for the country in which the adapter is operated.

Warning / limitation 3. Stop using the adapter if the connector is loose, damaged or becomes abnormally hot.

Warning / limitation 4. A Soft AP can expose the host's connection to other devices; secure it with a strong password and follow workplace network policy.

Warning / limitation 5. Legacy operating systems may no longer receive security updates even when a network driver remains available.

Troubleshooting by symptom

16 · Diagnostics

Adapter is not detected. Try a direct USB port, check Device Manager/System Information and install the CM492/RTL8812AU driver.

5GHz network is missing. Confirm the router broadcasts 5GHz, move closer, verify the regulatory region and select a channel supported by both devices.

Speed is lower than expected. Check that the adapter uses USB 3.0 and 5GHz, reduce distance/interference and compare the negotiated link with the internet result.

Connection drops near a desktop tower. Move the adapter away from metal and USB 3.0 cable clusters using a suitable data extension if required.

Driver fails on macOS or Linux. Verify OS version, CPU architecture, kernel/security requirements and the current official driver's stated support before retrying.
